India is the seventh largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of 7,517 kilometers (4,671 mi). It borders Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Burma to the east. India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Indonesia in the Indian Ocean. Himalayan North — Mountainous and beautiful, a tourist destination for the adventurous and the spiritual. The Plains — The country's capital New Delhi is here. The river Yamuna flows through this plain. Many of the events that shaped India's history took place in this region. Western India — Home to the the colorful cities of Rajasthan - Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner, as well as the country's most vibrant and biggest city Mumbai, Goa wonderful beaches. North-Eastern India — The country's tribal corner, with beautiful landscapes and famous for Tea Gardens. Consists of eight tiny states popularly nicknamed as The Eight Sisters. Eastern India — India's mostly rural region, its largest city is Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), the temple cities of Puri of Lord Jagannath fame and Bhubaneswar are both in Orissa.
Central India, Madhya Pardesh located in the heart of India
is the largest state in the country, sprawling over 4,43,000
km. It has one third of India's forests and hence numerous
natural parks and sanctuaries, including Kanha and
Bandhavgarh. Geographically it is a land of contrasts, with
river valleys, dense forests and rolling plains overlooked
by the ancient hills of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges and
the sprawling highlands of the Malwa plateau. South India ranks the highest in terms of social and economic development in areas such as fertility rate and infrastructure; the fertility rate of South India is 1.9, the lowest of all regions in India. |
